An angler hooks a trout and reels in his line at 5 in./s. Assume the tip of the fishing rod is 11 ft above the water and directly above the angler, and the fish is pulled horizontally directly toward the angler (see figure). Find the horizontal speed of the fish when it is 20 ft from the angler.

Suppose that you are designing an instrument panel for a large industrial machine. The initial design of the machine requires the person using it to be able to reach 700 mm from a particular position. The reach for adult women from this position is known to have a mean of 800 mm with a standard deviation of 100 mm. The reach for adult men is known to have a mean of 900 mm with a standard deviation of 100 mm. Both women’s and men’s reach from this position is normally distributed. c) If you were to redesign this equipment, how close would you have to make the parts to be reached in order to ensure that only 2% of women would be unable to use it?

1. An average of the most recent surveys of the American public’s party identification indicates that 45% of eligible voters identify themselves as Democrats, 45% of eligible voters identify themselves as Republicans, 8% of eligible voters identify themselves as Independents, and 2% of eligible voters identify themselves as members of a third party. The latest census indicates that 19% of the public lives in the Northeast, 23% of the public lives in the Midwest, 36% of the public lives in the South, and 22% of the public lives in the West. Assume that the distribution of partisans is uniform in all parts of the country. If you randomly select respondents to participate in a survey, what is the probability that (20 points): a. The first person you contact will be a Republican? b. The first person you contact will be either a Democrat or an Independent? c. The first two people you contact will be an Independent and a member of a third party (in that order)? d. The first person you contact will be a Democrat, given that you choose a member of one of the two major parties? e. The first person you contact will be a Republican living in the South? f. The first two people you contact will be a Democrat from the West and a Northeasterner (in no particular order)? g. The first person you contact will be a member of a third party, given that you do not select someone from the Midwest?

Now that you have a field with fencing around it, let’s grow some crops on it to make some money. In the last section we used quadratics functions to maximize the area. Similarly, in this section we will be using quadratic functions to maximize revenue. Let’s say we have access to planting 2 different crops, Watermelons and Grapes. We can find the revenue of a crop by the equation: R = (p0 + px)(n0 - nx) Where R is the revenue, p0 is the starting price, n0 is the amount sold at the starting price, p is the price increase, n is the decrease in the amount sold per price increase, and x is the number of price increases. Crop A: Watermelons have a starting price of $12.00 per m2 of area sold. At this price, you are able to sell 45 m2 worth. For every $2.00 increase, you will sell 1 m2 less. So the first task is to figure out how to put these values into the equation above, and turn it into a quadratic function. Then you will need to find the value of x in order to make the revenue as large as possible. Once you know x, the number of price increases, you can then find what you should price your Watermelons per m2. Equation: Number of price increases: x = R= Number of price increases: x = Price of watermelons per m^2 =
